National Youth Skills Institute Miri, Sarawak



Miri, Sarawak - The IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia in the picture above is giving a talk for the career path of the students of National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) in Miri, Sarawak. The audience are the students of IKBN Miri, and the feedback that we gain from them are they are determined by Captain Nazri's speech. We really hope that these efforts can produce more local Malaysian seafarers in the future.

Captain Nazri together with SMC helping ex seafarer, Vimalraj.





PETALING JAYA: Vimalraj S/O Vesunathan was a seafarer, he was unfortunate as he was involved in an accident during working as a cadet. As a result of this accident, he was paralyzed from his waist to his feet. Alam Budi has taken action for this incident and didn't ignore Vimalraj as he was one of the crew in their ship. Captain Nazri(second from left, second picture), the IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia has come to his concern that Vimalraj are part of the industry as he was a seafarer, therefore in order to not giving up Vimalraj's hope, Captain Nazri is trying to find a suitable job or any employment for Vimalraj. Vimalraj is interested in IT fields. He is currently pursuing his study in advanced software installation course in Pusat Rehabilitasi Perkeso Melaka. He is also interested in IT studies via net such as E-Business and programming. He has the skills to make slides, video presentation and short video making. He is currently living in Gelugor, Penang. Moreover, he is willing to continue his study in shipping management field. He is also willing to work in a crewing department field.

Meeting between OSV members and IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia.

SUBANG JAYA: Captain Nazri, with Dato' Captain Jailani Jalal (Director of Ports and Seafarers Welfare) met MOSVA members to discuss about the issues that has to be faced by Malaysian crew, and how to improve Seafarer Management Center's database. It is the IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia's concern to discuss and trying to solve the issues of Malaysian crews. Some of the issues that discussed in the meeting are:

  • How to improve Malaysian seafarers' discipline and behavior.
  • Certain position on a ship are vacant, but there are no seafarers available, therefore in the future Marine Department of Malaysia will train existing seafarers to encourage them to be promoted to officers and masters.
  • Seafarers sea time on the sea are not counted if they work on barges, therefore if a seafarer work on barges, the sea time of the seafarer will be counted but halved in the future.

This has come to IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia's concern, and will take action on the issues discussed.

Seafarer Management Centre and UMT Collaboration






PUTRAJAYA: The brochure above is the brochure from UMT that offer courses towards students that wanted to further their studies in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. Seafarer Management Centre (SMC) will collaborate with UMT to promote seafarers to further their studies in marine expertise with Masters Degree. In the brochure, it stated all the courses available in UMT including Maritime Logistics and Transportation and Supply Chain.

Career Talk with Marine Engineering Students in Politeknik Ungku Omar


IPOH: Captain Nazri presenting IMO to inspire students at Politeknik Ungku Omar by giving career talk to the students. In the speech that Captain Nazri delivered, the students seems determined to make seafaring as their proficiency and their career path. After the talk, Captain Nazri had a Questions and Answers session with the students.

Meeting and Experiencing the Borneo Riverine Trip


SARAWAK: Captain Nazri, (right) with Dato' Jailani Jalal(second to right), Pengarah Hal Ehwal Pelaut dan Pelabuhan, with local port officers. Captain Nazri and Dato' Jailani meeting the local seafarers to improvise their competency. One of the objectives of this meeting is that to meet the potential youngster to promote the seafaring career, so that they can be motivated and inspired to choose seafaring as their career path. Also another purpose is to search for new opportunities for marine related career. Consequently, this meeting is to support the local tourism, needs efficient and effective mode of transport. The boat as seen in the picture is an express boat, which is the main transport of Sarawak when traveling using the river.

Visits to Laguna Park




KLANG: Captain Nazri inspiring cooks that taking Shipboard Catering Management Course on 21st of February at Laguna Park. Captain Nazri motivates them and the feedbacks that we gain from the cooks are positive.

KUALA LUMPUR: Captain Nazri seen here in a television on RTM TV1 to tell the function and role of Seafarer's Management Center (SMC), and also the role of IMO Ambassador. As the IMO Maritime Ambassador for Malaysia, he officially become the icon of Seafarers Management Center. The SMC and the IMO Maritime Ambassador need to work together to ensure the needs of seafarers. The talk aired on 17th of February 2017.

Contraves Ship Simulator


CYBERJAYA: The IMO Ambassador for Malaysia visits the Contraves Maritime Training Center of Excellence on 10th of February. Captain Nazri tried the shipping simulator and share his broad experience in maritime industry with the seafarers that use this simulator as their training.

Introduction to International Maritime Organization Ambassador






WHAT MAKES AN IMO AMBASSADOR
An International Maritime Organization Ambassador is a spokesperson, supporter or a representative for maritime and seafaring profession. The member government and international organization identifies IMO Maritime Ambassadors by selecting the ambassador to promote the maritime and seafaring profession and raise awareness of the positive benefits of choosing a career at sea or other things that related to maritime.

IMO Maritime Ambassadors are encouraged to inspire and share their knowledge and passion about the world of maritime with others, especially towards young people that staring out on their further education, apprenticeships and career pathways.

The IMO Ambassador can inspire young people to consider their career path whether at sea or in the maritime industries. The objective is to reach new target audiences and inspire a new generation of maritime experts and seafarers.

WHAT DOES MARITIME AMBASSADOR DO?
IMO ambassador can share their knowledge and experience in many ways. Below are the examples on how IMO Ambassador can advocate young people to chose maritime field as their career path.

  • Visit Local Youth groups or other local community groups to deliver a presentation highlighting the importance of the maritime industry.
  • Have a stand or give a talk at a local career forum, community fair or other local event.
  • Visit local schools and further education colleges.
  • Engage with local radio, television, or newspapers; offer a "day-in-the-life" view of the Maritime Ambassador's profession.
  • Give interviews or provide video clips and information about entry routes and the different seafaring education and training programmes.
  • Write in to local or national newspaper when a story raises issues which touch on the maritime world, tell them your story "as a maritime professional".
